Super sisters, showers and sharing Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

If I have seemed a bit quiet of late it is because I have been kept very busy creating my new blog! Let me know if you like it : ) also keeping me busy are the mountains of inspiring entries for my Live Earth Gibson.

In the run up to announcing a final winner – as a little teaser – I thought I would share with you just some of the entries which have made me smile…more soon…

Pee Outdoors – that is what Adam in Pheonix AZ wants us to do, so committed to the cause he even has his own range of tees! In his own words “I watch thousands of gallons of water literally go down the toilet, and I have decided there is a better way: Pee Outdoors! I save on the water bill, and my dog does it, so it gives us a few more minutes of “quality time” together each day, as well. The plants love it, too!” Brilliant.

On a similar bathroom note – I have had a number of entries concerning shower water waste. Steph in CA keeps a bucket in her shower so that waste water collected can be used to water her plants. She said; “this is just a routine I have”. I like this because if, like Steph, more of us can just get into a simple ‘routine’ no matter how small it will never seem like a chore to our bit!

My other favorite shower entry is from Rob: I saw my girlfriends green team shirt that said “save water, shower with me.” So i did. I’m with you on that one ; )

Out of the many stories I received ‘The tales of the Super Sisters’ sent by Michael in Denmark is a favorite so far. It is about the life of his two daughters – an unlikely duo of real-life environmentally conscious super heroes!  Nice.

Lucas Nguan from Singapore really made me think about how bad I am. I draw and write a lot, sometimes I put just one note on a page or a single doodle. I am always being unnecessarily precious about my work. Lucas, as shown in this incredible picture uses every last millimeter of space. Lesson learnt for me. Look out for more of my favorite entries soon xx

A fixed gear bike is like owning a dog Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

So near where I am staying there is a gang, a gang I really want to be part of. Please dispel now any images of the lost boys or fat hairy men; this is a collection of cute but super geeky boys who like nothing better than to spend a Saturday afternoon dedicated to the urban pursuit of bike polo. Yes, bike polo.

I’m not quite sure if my keenness is because they are all quite cute or if it is the allure of becoming a fixed gear bike aficionado – the former most likely. Either way, I’ve had my beautiful bike for nearly a month now and I’m in love.

The lovely but slightly odd side affect of my new fixed gear bike is that I’ve made several new pals just by riding around. Strangers approach me with no inhibitions and always with the opening line “cool bike, I’ve got a blah geek blah myself”. The conversation then goes on like two proud parents.

Joe is my favourite bike random – we met because he chased me for six blocks. Under normal circumstances that would be quite creepy but it turns out he works in a bike shop (which could prove useful) and has taken it upon himself to become my bike Sensei. I’ve also made a pretty cute twitter bike geek friend @DeanDeanie ; )

So in 3 weeks, I’ve fallen off 5 times, made several new friends, hit 2 parked cars (down with cars!) and managed once, almost twice to ride backwards. I think I might hold off for another week before getting stuck in with the bike polo boys. Watch this space…..

If you don’t love it, pass it on Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

I move around a lot, I always have. The plus side of this sometimes-tiring life is that my possessions must always be edited to perfection. Everything I own, I love. Throw away and fast fashion – not for me. It will soon be time for me to move once again, so again, it is time to sort through my life.

Of course things come and go and I do bend my rules occasionally…like for my new totally justifiable Betty B vintage fabric jumpsuit bought because; “it’s perfect for riding my new bike”. Yeah right, like I don’t have other things I could wear. But generally, I am very good.

Despite my nomadic life and progressing from child to adult there are some constants that will always be with me. My favourites are two t-shirts; the first was a gift from an aunt in Tokyo. It was faded, worn and quite frankly was not what eight year old me wanted. It came with a note; ‘Ultra fighter needs a new home’. Turns out it was actually from my very cool fifteen-year-old cousin – now I liked Ultra Fighter. My other favourite we picked up in South Africa – it simply says; Aquarians are so adventurous! It sums me up well. My most recent acquisition – a certain I heart NY tee – will for sure be taking its place among my constants from now on : )

The constants that I have are humble and everyday but they have a narrative and I love them. Consider what you have, really love it or pass it on to someone who will!!!
